The Association of Friends of South West Surrey (Music Centre) Concert Band

26 January 2008

Dear SWSCB Members, Parents & Friends

Many thanks for the support you gave at the Christmas Concert at the end of last term. The raffle prizes were fantastic as were the refreshments, not to mention the fabulous playing by band members. A special thank you as always must go to Mike, Lin and all the tutors. If you entered the Christmas Quiz and would like to check your answers, they have been published on the website, so do please have a look.

Refreshments: This term's rota was issued just before the start of term (apologies to those of you who were called in on the first Saturday back at such short notice). If you haven't received a rota it means that you are not required this term; but do please check by reading the band noticeboard. Now that the new committee have got to grips with knowing who the members are and which band they are in, the refreshment rota should now, once again, be efficiently managed, thank you for bearing with us.

Subscriptions: Worryingly, it looks as though the voluntary subscriptions are down by nearly 50% on last year. Please note that this voluntary subscription is additional to the subscription you are asked to pay SCC for the hire of the school, tutors, music etc. We are extremely grateful for the support that this brings to the band. There is a subscription slip at the end of this newsletter to remind you that this term's voluntary contribution is now due (£15 per year or £6 a term) if you have paid your £15 for the year, please ignore this request. Your slip and money should be returned to the registrars who will forward it to the treasurer.

CD: We hope you agree that 'Nulli Secundus' the new band CD is quite exceptional. Sales have been better than expected, but there are still quite a few left in stock to sell over the coming months. The registrars will happily sell more copies on Saturday mornings - £10 for a single copy or £7.50 each for multiple copies.

Uniform: We are short of several senior band waistcoats, if you know of any senior band members who have recently left, please can you check with them that they have returned their waistcoats. The current stock of junior band bow ties is running low; a new order is about to be placed. If you have moved up from junior to senior and don't need your tie any more, please consider handing it in to form a second hand stock for new members. Likewise, it is hard to source long black skirts at the moment, if you have any that are now too small, we'd be extremely grateful if these could be donated for second hand stock as well. The registrars will be please to accept items and pass on to Eileen Preston who is responsible for uniform.

Cathedral Concert - 2 February: We are very grateful to the Dean and Chapter for allowing us to hold rehearsals and give an informal concert in Guildford Cathedral. Junior band and senior helpers should arrive at the main front entrance of the Cathedral at 9.30am, this is when morning services finish, so please don't be too early. Senior band should arrive at 10.30am. The registers will be on a table inside the front entrance, it is important that all members sign in on arrival. Once registered, band members should not leave the building until after the concert. We will be using cloakroom and refreshment facilities in the crypt, so there is no need to leave the building. Biscuits and squash will be served to band members, but they are welcome to bring a packed snack/lunch if more sustenance is required! The concert starts at 12 noon and should be finished by 1.30pm - there is no charge but we will be holding a raffle and asking for donations as people leave. If you can help us with raffle prizes, please them along on the day. The Cathedral Refectory will be open for coffee/lunch, if you would like to reserve a table please use the contact link.

Tour Presentation - 9 February: A representative from Rayburn Tours will be giving a presentation about the forthcoming tour to Austria at 10.15am in the main hall at Queen Eleanor's. Junior practice will finish at 10am and we ask that all tour members and parents are sat in the hall by 10.15am. Senior band practice will start once the presentation is over. This is the final day for any latecomers to decide if they'd like to be considered, so please come along even if you are still thinking about it.

Musicathon - 15 March: This date has been set aside for a sponsored musicathon to raise funds for the forthcoming tour. Further details to be issued very soon - watch this space!
