Founded in 1983, South West Surrey Concert Band (SWSCB) has a reputation for performing a wide range of music to a high standard, whilst making sure that our young musicians have fun at the same time.
As a Surrey Arts ensemble, we welcome woodwind, brass and percussion players, aged 8 to 18. We rehearse on Saturday mornings during term-time and enjoy playing a variety of music under the guidance of experienced conductors and tutors.
There are two bands, Junior and Senior, which between them have a membership of around 80. Players normally start with the Junior Band and can join the Senior Band based on playing ability and the availability of places.
New players are always welcome. There is no minimum playing experience required for entry to the Junior Band and prospective members are invited to attend rehearsals on a trial basis before deciding whether they would like to join. We are always looking for more bassoons and oboes!
There is always lots of support and encouragement available from an excellent team of tutors and more experienced band members.
The cost of membership is kept to a minimum by Surrey Arts. For the current cost and term dates please see the Surrey Arts website:
SWSCB provides a fantastic environment for young musicians to develop their skills, make friends and have a lot of fun in the process.
We usually play at least one concert each term and there are opportunities to go on a residential stay with the band or even on tour abroad.
You may end up attending a rehearsal in your PJs or playing concerts at the seaside or local fetes. The aim is to enjoy what we do.
Some feedback from a member of the audience in 2023:
“On May 7th my husband and I went to … Eastbourne Bandstand. I am writing to say how much we both enjoyed the concert...a wide variety of music by very talented and hardworking young people…we would not have been able to distinguish the band from a professional band had we had our eyes closed!”
Every Saturday during term time.
